View Full Version : TowerDefence - who's the FileCabi.net champ?

Quite possibly the most addictive online waste of time I've played. :xyxthumbs:
http://www.handdrawngames.com/DesktopTD/
Pretty easy to get the hang of, the quickstart guide tells you what you need to know, and you can look at the mazes other players have built to give you ideas of what works.
Play on "medium" difficulty, submit your score, and add it to a group I started named "FileCabi.net" - let's see who's the champ here. :D
The score to beat at the moment is 6703, that I just got.
(A tip - pressing "n" during the game will send in the next wave of critters, and you get extra points for doing that, rather than waiting for the waves to come on their own.)

Wow. :rasta:
Looks like you need a few tips - click on the "player mazes" link on the page to see examples of how others have constructed their mazes, and how many points they've scored with each setup.
I think my first try at the game was something like 2000 points, and then I looked at what higher scoring mazes looked like and immediately improved several thousand points.

Sorry. :( And you're quite wellcome! :D
A tip to imporove - smaller numer of (non pellet) towers, upgraded further. Make the maze so that you get maximum benefit from your few fully upgraded towers; make the maze circle the "killzone", so that the critters end up passing within the range of your best guns more than once. :xyxthumbs:

Crap. I can only get in the low 2000s. I keep on stuffing up my mazes.
The mistake you are making is that you concentrate on building a large maze with many squirt towers (and other towers), instead of concentrating on upgrading your existing squirt and other towers.
A single fully upgraded squirt tower, positioned so that it can reach the critters for a long time, will do you MUCH more good than a dozen squirt towers upgraded only a little.
I'll take a few examples of low scoring mazes making this mistake:
2861 points:
http://i13.tinypic.com/68bcj7n.gif
and
1929 points:
http://i14.tinypic.com/6c5eddd.gif
Now compare this to high scoring mazes:
6904 points:
http://i9.tinypic.com/62z6e4l.gif
and
6703 points:
http://i7.tinypic.com/5z39id5.gif
Notice what's common to these - a centralized killzone with a half a dozen, or a few more fully upgraded towers doing most of the damage, and a maze that circles around that killzone, so that the critters stay in range of this killzone as long as possible... often a good idea is to have a few freeze towers around the killzone to slow down the critters in the places where they come under heaviest fire.
In that last maze in there, I first constructed the pellet towers to the top left and the left size, near where the critters come in, and initially that first freeze tower was a pellet tower too - I then built the five squirt towers in row, and upgraded all of them a couple of times... I then built one of the air-defense towers in the middle. After that, I replaced the pelet tower at the start of that "killing zone" with a freeze tower, gave it one upgrade, continued upgrading the pellet towers, but not equally - I concentrated on the uppermost and the lowermost squirt towers, fully upgrading them before buying upgrades for the rest. I bought the second air defense tower, and the second freeze tower pretty early on, but the the last two squirt towers, and the last freeze tower I bought and upgraded only in the late game.
If you do this sort of thing, prioritizing upgrades of well placed towers rather than buying more towers, you'll find your scores improving greatly.

Considering what you did do, that's not bad. :)
Upgrading pellet towers isn't worth it - it wastes money that could be spent on more powerful towers. Second, upgrading many towers only part of the way is MUCH less effective than upgrading a few towers all the way - as many upgrades as are allowed.
If you look at the FileCabi.Net scoreboard, and click on my name, you can see the various constructs I've used in my best scoring games... also, if you click "player mazes" you can see the mazes used by others... that's a good source of ideas too. :xyxthumbs:

The flyers were killing me.
MightyTiny
June 16th, 2007, 02:28 PM
Yes, most definitely too many squirt towers - and the same problem as before, you use many towers with few upgrades, rather than few towers with many upgrades.
Here are a few designs among my best scoring mazes - note how they work - they have a centralized "killing zone" which ranges over much of the maze, and the critters are marched within that killing zone to take as long a route as possible. In that killing zone, there are few specialized towers that I've fully upgraded:
6813 points:
http://www.handdrawngames.com/DesktopTD/Maps/1870659.gif
6703 points:
http://www.handdrawngames.com/DesktopTD/Maps/1769290.gif
and
6306 points:
http://www.handdrawngames.com/DesktopTD/Maps/1768692.gif
One fully upgraded Squirt tower is probably worth 3 or four ALMOST fully upgraded squirt towers, because with the last upgrade, the power greatly increases, and not only that, the RANGE of the tower also increases.
Oh, and when you improve on your old scores, submit your score at the end by giving your name, and then the name of the group you want to add the score to: "FileCabi.Net"

MightyTiny
June 16th, 2007, 03:55 PM
I think that one suffered a bit from the spaced-out kill zone... I've found it more effective to have your big guns lumped at the center, in a way that ensures that once they are fully upgraded, they reach two rows to at least two directions - to maximize the time the critters must stay in range.
One centralized swarm tower that you keep upgrading after each wave of flyers, works pretty well to eliminate most if not all flyers... though if you want to get the two flying bosses in late game, you need at least two centralized, fully upgraded swarm towers... that's what I've found in practice. I'm not sure whether it's worth it to bother with those two.

Try using diagonal corridors as much as possible. It causes the "germs" or whatever the hell they are to have to stop and turn every few seconds. Really slows them down. I've also been using a swarm tower at each exit. Helps keep those fucking flyers from escaping, since they always follow the spawn ones which take longer to kill (have to kill them twice), drawing the fire of your squirters away from the flyers.

After the game is finished, it first asks you whether you want to submit it and under what name - after you sumbit your score, it gives you the option of attaching your score to a group scoreboard... on that page, enter FileCabi.net, and your score will be on the FileCabi.net scoreboard.:xyxthumbs:
You can click the "Group scores" link and enter FileCabi.net to see the current standings. Don't know of any way of attaching a submitted score to a scoreboard later, if you miss that opportunity, so it looks like you'll just have to kick our butts again to claim that #1 spot. :arcadefreak:

The new critters, those slow moving dark ones that can take a lot of damage really mix it up, especially when they are followed by the fast movers. If you let them reach your killzone at the same time, your guns will focus on the slow movers, and the fast movers may just slip by. I don't think so - tried it out, and it's a bit simplistic. It lacks the depth and possibilities that TowerDefence has - the game seems like a version of tower defense where you don't build your own course for the critters to go through.
There's also another game with the essentially the same concept as VR Defender Y3k, callled Onslaught2 ( http://www.kongregate.com/games/gaby/onslaught2 ) and I think that it too is a bit more interesting, because it allows you to form combination attacks by building two different defesive towers side to side, and then maxing them both damagewise - that makes the two towers have a combined effect that is different from the towers individually. Also, in that game allows you to upgrade specific properties in each tower, rather than the whole tower (each tower has range, rate of fire, and damage, which each can be upgraded separately)
Onslaught2 also has a map editor that you can use to try out your own map designs.
Still, TowerDefense rules because of it's staying power. You exhaust the possibilities of games like Onslaught2 and VR Defender Y3k pretty quickly, wheras in TowerDefense, there's always opportunity to invent new tactics by changing your maze design. :xyxthumbs:
Thanks for the link though - Defender Y3k isn't a bad game at all!

i'll check tommorow if it works, if so...be afraid, be very afraid.
-edit- it seems to work again, see that there are some new towers first some experimenting to do with my old maze with building in these new ones. or just use the 3k fixed thingy to look -edit-

Just so that it won't be too easy for you, I just improved my score a tad... It's now 7272 you've got to beat. :D

killer game. Reminds me of Lemmings. Those flyers kill me. I think all 17 lives I lost were birds. 52nd place for my first "official" game. Had a couple practice ones first.

I recommend building one swarm tower as close to the middle of the screen as you can, preferably right on the cross that denotes the center. Then just keep upgrading that tower regularly, between the flyer swarms. By the time the boss-flyers come near the end, that tower should be fully upgraded.

I'm gonna crack 7000 if it kills me. ;) 6556 and no lives lost on the last one...
I think I have the hang of knowing when to upgrade each tower. Gotta prioritize. ;)

I'm currently trying my luck at "the 100" challenge mode - playing it from the Kongregate site ( http://www.kongregate.com/games/preecep/desktop-tower-defense-1-5 ), they've got a challenge there where you've got to score 12 thousand points in "the 100" mode. The challenge difficulty level is rated at "Impossible". :arcadefreak:
And DAMN it's hard!

Have you played this on a laptop touchpad? Is it easier with a mouse?

Haven't tried it on a laptop - I'd imagine that it'd be easier using a mouse, though that, I guess, depends on how nimble you are at using the touchpad. :arcadefreak:

Yeah, I suppose it wouldn't be any easier for me, since I'm used to a touchpad. I'd have to get accustomed to the mouse.

Yeah, no shit. I'm OH SO CLOSE to knocking Tiny off his perch, but one small little error gets me every time.
And you know what? Even if I do get it, I'll probably STILL keep playing.:mad2: :1orglaugh: :mad2: :1orglaugh:

How the fuck does somebody score over 8K with a maze like this:
http://www.handdrawngames.com/DesktopTD/Maps/2830306.gif

I figure he is changing the openings for the critters to go back and forth through the maze, but how the fuck does he get the flying critters?
The guy consistently scores 8K+ using mazes that look like this one.

The guy definitely uses juggling - selling towers and reconstructing them to change the route the critters have to take through the maze to make them go back and forth.
I don't use juggling, because it just feels too much like cheating to me.
As for the flyers, all I can think of is that the guy DOES have a fully upgraded swarm tower during the game, but sells it and replaces it with a pellet tower after the last round of flyers... perhaps to confuse people who might want to copy his tactics.
I myself always sell my swarm tower after the flying bosses at the end, after which no further flyers are forthcoming, and replace it with some other tower (usually a bash tower). This to gain money to quickly upgrade other towers for the end.

I don't see juggling as cheating. It would still be hard as hell. Once you get so many critters inside the maze, there are going to be some close to both points of juggling. I've used it on occasion, usually when the a couple critters from the second to last boss get past most of my defenses. Then I have to have them go back and forth a couple times so my last line of squirt towers can get them.

But respecting your opinion, I haven't crushed your high score using the tactic. :D :D
