I believe he has spent £20,000 on Vocal lessons in Italy, and he had performed on stage quite a few times before he broke his collarbone in an accident. So he Was a "Ringer" in reality.

I believe it. He's pretty good to be so undiscovered.

Ringer or not, I'm amazed that people have taken any interest at all in opera. It's a beautiful genre of music that requires an amazing ability and training that the overwhelming majority of today's pop singers are completely unable to touch. People like what they like and I'm fine with that but realizing talent when we see it and not sneering at something we don't "get" seems to be a rare thing today.

Opera isn't my thing for a number of reasons... including:
1) They don't speak english and if they do, they definately don't sound like it
2) I can't relate to anything they're saying
3) If I got to do research to figure out why they're saying ... I got better things to listen to.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not pissin on it or anything but I'd it's easier for me to listen to songs that I can relate to and ones that have a beat. Listen to whatever floats your boat, I'm sure opera has a strong "fan base".. blah blah blah.
This guy isn't going to be selling anymore cell phones anytime soon.

Man, it's been a long time since I've heard a voice like that. Most shit nowadays is either dudes crying to their "bitches" for some pussy, or screaming motherfuckers who just cant seem to find a note if they sat on it and it went up their ass. Ringer or not, this guy is awesome.

X2! Even if folks dont understand it, those of us that do love opera can "feel" the emotion in the performance. I guess most kids these days go to those faggy emo concerts, or a hardcore show and throw their arms and legs around, "pretending" to be some sort of Mister Miyagi with all the Karate moves.
I know I just sneered, but I couldnt resist.

Some people on this board are absolutely ignorant. Obviously this guy had some training, but talent is something you cant get through training. even the highest grade diamonds need polishing before they can shine. Try find someone that you know of can produce the voice somewhere close to this guy. Even mentioning training as a stunt makes me sick.

I kid you!:D I kid...
No, man, Im a total metalhead, but it is truly an amazing thing seeing a guy achieve his dream, in any language. More than the music, catching the moment that a humble man achieves his dream is a momentous occasion, a rare occasion, and one to be celebrated.
:xyxthumbs: Paul mothafuckin Potts baby!
Who da man?
Ill bet he can drink your ass under the table too.

Great job, the right act won! :xyxthumbs:
The critisism he received for being a "pro" was very misguided - a professional singer is someone who gets paid for singing - Paul never got paid for singing; he's sung in an AMATEUR opera troupe, and has funded his vocal training by working an ordinary job. He had a "masterclass" with Pavarotti, which is essentially briefly singing in front of the guy, and getting a few tips, and paying a fee for that service.
The tabloids, looking for a story, bloated it all out of proportion, and made it seem like the guy was a professional opera singer, best buddies with his deer mentor Pavarotti. Whatever sells papers, I guess.
I doubt that there are many participants (who get past the first round) in a competition like this who haven't had any training, and have never performed in front of an audience.

Hmmm.
I liked the first video a lot more (also on filecabi).
When someone walks into a room and is expected to be spectacularly bad and then is amazing it is fantastic to watch. The shock, the surprise, the novelty of it all.
When someone has backing singers, is in a new tux, has smoke around their feet, and when they reach the chorus have sparks flying behind them almost anything they do just seems formulaic, predictable and boring.
Opera singers do the same or better every day all over the world and don't have half of that crap surrounding them.
When this guy was a diamond in the rough, he was exciting and interesting; everyone wanted to look.
Now he is a merely a polished piece of bling in a big, crass medallion and just looks tacky, vulgar and overdone.
Terrific shame, but these shows will do that to anyone. Cheese them up, make them the entertainment class equivelant of a brushed aluminuim chair from ikea.

This guy was decent. The best part about the performance was the fact he is getting people excited about singing.
If you liked Paul Potts, check out the most famous tenor in his prime:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4mX7ugJ5NM8
Luciano Pavarotti singing "E lucevan le stelle" (this video's even subtitled for that lazy guy), a sad aria from Pucinni's Tosca. Actually, the whole opera is really depressing: <A href="http://www.metoperafamily.org/metopera/history/stories/synopsis.aspx?id=25" target=_blank>http://www.metoperafamily.org/metopera/history/stories/synopsis.aspx?id=25 (file://<object width=)
You know, this video probably won't have nearly the same effect as Potts' since Pavarotti is seen as an elitist and "that fat opera guy" to most people.
Anyway, I hope Paul Potts can get some further training and introduce opera into more people's lives.

Well, I'll be damned if I didn't happen to bump into Paul Potts today at a pizza joint today. So now he's an international star, performing all over the world, and he's still very much the same "aw shucks" guy you see in this video. He seems incapable of having an ego. Fame couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.
