When I was younger (in my 20s) hell, I made jokes out loud about them. As I grew older and started seeing people near me becoming afflicted with things (diabetes) and getting part/or all of their foot/leg cut off I found myself not laughing and when I became disabled well, I just stopped.
I can say this though...alot of handicapped people don't exhibit an outward physical handicap. By that I mean a limb is not missing or they're not slurring their speech etc. In my case I am missing a lung and I simply do not move fast (the looks I get when I park in the handicap spots are priceless). Yet most handicapped people I know have a helluva sense of humor because we don't have time to feel pity for ourselves.
So I won't get offended by your behavior...besides, I am prolly laughing harder than you.

At my day care center when I was like in 5th grade there was a retarded girl who would only yell STUPID or whine.
I laughed at her a lot, but that was kind of it as far as laughing at ppl with handicaps.

I was at a bar, and a friend of mine said something stupid. I replied to their stupidity with the gimp-armed chest-slapping retard routine, when I noticed a dude on the other side of the bar who had real chest-slapping gimp arms.
I felt bad about that. Thank God, him and his large redneck friends didn't notice.

There was a paraplegic kid at my high-school. He couldn't control his bowel movements very well.
He shit his pants in my English class and most of us laughed.
If there is a Hell, that's where I'm headed when I die.
*** I just remembered that there were several mentally disabled people in one of me P.E. classes in high-school. There was this extremely disabled girl who was about 18-20 or so.
She was very similar to Timmy from Southpark, minus the wheelchair.
She had the nicest set of tits. Several times that semester she lifted her shirt and bra and we got to see them. I will admit, I wasn't complaining.

C'mon, the kid has Downs Syndrome and sings waaay off key. You gotta laugh at it because he is seriously trying to sound good (oh puleeze!). I've never laughed at the Physicaly or Mentaly disabled, even as a child, I've always found pity for them as a child and as an adult I regularly dontate either my time or money to help, specificaly the mentaly disabled
Many of these Kids are the result of Alcohol and Drug abuse, and it's depressing at times knowing that some of these kids are disabled because of the actions of their mother while she was pregnant.
So no I dont laugh at them.

Aw come on it's all in good fun. Laughter makes the world go round.
I used to work at a care center for mentally handicapped people (Lindon Care Center) and it was one of the funnest jobs I had. Granted, you have to take the good with the bad like hosing off shit, wiping, etc. but those guys made me laugh every damn day. It wasn't really at them, it was just at their antics.
One day I was working with a friend and we were working with a guy named Lloyd. Anyway, Lloyd didn't like my friend very much, but long story short Lloyd bit him! Oh man..I just bust out laughing after he bit him and Lloyd kept saying, "Go home! Go home!" My friend said, "No you go home!" (I know, mature.) Then Lloyd was like, "I'm sorry I'm sorry." and my friend said, "You're gonna be sorry." The funniest part was that I had my cell phone in my pocket, and somehow it managed to turn on the sound recording by itself so I have the whole arguement on tape. Oh man...good times.

I had a noticeably down syndrome guy serve me today.
I didn't laugh.
I didn't even laugh afterwards.
Perhaps these years of alcohol abuse have changed me? I just don't find them as funny as I used to.
But I guess they aren't really retarded.. downies.. they're just slow and look different. It's been awhile since I've seen a true, hardcore, no-nonsense, spaz-attack retard.

Sarah Silverman, the new "Kong of Comedy". Don't know her? She made up such jokes as: "When life gives you AIDS, makes lemon AIDS!"
There are more female comedians than you think, many are descriminated against because, "girls are too caring to be funny" or "she might change her act".

I don't laugh at them. But I think there is a difference between laughing at them and making fun of them.
One time in school at lunch, this retarded kid in a wheelchair ran over my foot. And he just looked at me and smiled. Now, I don't know the point I'm trying to make... But that little bastard ran over my foot! And it hurt.

First off, assuming that I never went through any life altering events is ignorant of you. To assume that I have no sense of humor or never laugh because I do not laugh at mentally or physically challenged people is, then again quite ignorant, for I am known in my community to be a girl who laughs and enjoys herself quite a bit lol.
Secondly, trying to evoke pity in order to justify yourself is not only low of you, but disgusting.

An argument is not necessarily meant to be negative, it can also be viewed as an exchange of ideas.
I believe that you need to understand that life in part or in whole, depending on your take on things, is about perception. This explains why my opinions might differ from yours and why my idea of "fun" or what is "funny" is not like yours.

Thats not funny, she isnt funny sorry. Its true their are not many funny female comedians at least for me. Why is that? I know some pretty fuckin hilarious chicks though but overall the guys are funnier. My girlfriend has a funny dry sense of humour. When I make jokes at work or whatever the guys seem to laugh more than the females. They seem too busy trying to control each other. It comes down to what "clouds" said about differnet senses of humour. I know girls love a sense of humour, usually its the top thing on their list. As for laughing at the disabled, not my cup of tea.

What I meant to imply is that I'll be having a job here in a couple of months which entails that kind of work. As I've posted previously I'm training to be an EMT (Emergency Medical Technician, the dudes in the ambulances) and so within a couple of months after I get certified I'm gonna be working for Gold Cross, it's a private medical company. I'm gonna be exposed to all sorts of different viruses and diseases, though I'm being a bit overdramatic. It's really not that bad as long as I'm not stupid while working.

I don't think the original question was about physically handicapped. I think it's about mentally handicapped people.
it was handicaps in general
so both

What about fat people? Do you laugh at fat people Clouds? or maybe old people? you know.. the really really old ones (I don't laugh at them, they scare me mostly).
How about weird looking people?
What about those people that you can't tell what gender they are? Surely you laugh at them.. or at least a restrained chuckle?
I know.. you laugh at christians don't you? I know you do. It's ok, no-one important reads these boards, you can tell us.
:D
Why would I laugh at Christians? People can believe in whatever they want to believe in, it's none of my business and not my place to judge.
People laugh or make fun of people who are different for the most part because they either do not understand it, or just plain trying to put people down in order to feel better about themselves. Weak, if you ask me.
Now, if someone does something funny, I don't see why it would be bad to laugh. But to make fun at other people's expense, that's just not right IMO.

The other day a disabled woman in a wheelchair tried to communicate with me. She could'nt speak normally though and although talking in the best way she could, I could not understand what she was talking about. I've seen her around a few times before and most of the time out of sheer luck I manage to be friendly enough and talk back guessing what she is trying to say and that does the job. However this time I was talking to someone else who was mentaly chalenged and between the both of them this time I failed to know what she was talking about and I couldnt deal with both of them at the same time. This time she knew I did'nt understand her and the expression on her face as she wheeled herself away was one of pain and rejection. I felt like a real loser that day. I have to say that I now try to avoid disabled people a lot because of this reason, I don't know hot to react towards them and at the same time I don't want to hurt their feelings. I really do admire the people who work with them everyday. They are angels.

Depends on the person. People find things that are unsual funny, they see some spastic trying to eat his shoulder and they laugh because it seems so fucking weird to them. Dosn't mean they don't understand or they're trying to put the bloke down.
And people find things that are taboo funny, such as laughing at spastics. It's not socially acceptable by alot of people standards, which makes it's comedy value higher.
Personally I fucking love spastic jokes.

Handicapped - wrong word.
The film industry has managed to get away with laughing at people with all kinds of disabilities over the years. 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' and 'What About Bob' are two good examples. The way I see it is simple - don't laugh at them but laugh with them - just like they do in these two films. I have to admit that some mentally challenged people want to laugh and it's a way of defending their disability but when I see dickheads pointing at them and taking the piss out of them then I go fucking mental myself!
Different responses are something which separates adults from children IMO.

Eh. I can find plenty of things to laugh about that doesn't involve "handicapped" people.
I seem to laugh at things that are actually funny.
It's pretty pathetic that most of you guys get your kicks from other peoples misfortunes.

I don't laugh at their actual handicap. I laugh at some of the things they do. It's just funny to watch a handicap kid get in a yelling match with another handicap kid because they want to pick the first candy.
