not much of an attempted landing. Looked like he just aimed for the deck but didn't even gear down for the landing.

I think you're thinking of a different incident. The story about this video can be read here: http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,20867,21929256-31477,00.html

I've been following this on the news in Aus
Apparently the wind chagned direction in such a way that it pretty much had the effect of stalling the chopper & there was no way the engines had enough power to counter it and flare the chopper the way it needed to.
Hence... well we all saw the vid..
RIP to those who didn't make it.

Yeah apparently it was a 10-15 knot tail wind the pilot had to contend with. Pretty sad stuff.

There used to be loads of helicopter vids a while back then they seemed to have dried up. The best was the one where the copter went low level along a road then the blades hit a tree and it all went tits up. IMO.

Was it just me or did that look like something out of an old King Kong movie? Not saying it was fake, I don't believe it was, it just looked like a toy the way it bounced around. I would have liked to have had sound. It would have made it more real.

yes, i thought that it had to be a chopper or wind problem and not the pilot's.

That looked more fake than the guy shooting his hand. I think I saw some wires attached to it. Whoever shot it didnt even bother to put the boat into their bathtub, looks like they just used their grandma's blue carpet.
But, since it is real, hopefully their families are doing ok. What is the black and white footage at the end?

Black and White photos are of it underwater. They also had to get a body out of the chopper while under water. If i remember correctly the choppers was over 1 km down under water.

i love the armchair piloting we have here, i would venture to guess that none of yall were there ergo none of yall have any right to say that he was a good or bad pilot, there are many factors associated with landing a helicopter on flat land, now landing a helicopter on a 30 by 30 ft square on the back of an object moving at 25+ mph that has 3-4 feet of vertical travel every 5 seconds that might be easy for you master rotorheads here but for common folk such as myself, thats hard stuff

Not suprising, the pilot is Aussie. :rasta: I kid I kid.
Anyway, helicopters are tricky business. I know a dude who flies Apaches with the reserves and one day as he was sighting the guns for one of the Apaches a warning light came on telling him to land immediately. It's funny, because overe here they don't just fly over an air base. He was flying over the city. So I just watch as this beastly helicopter just parks it right in the middle of the road near my house. Interesting.
