I believe that it isn't lack of blood flow to the brain that blacks them out. If I remember correctly the reason people pass out from shit like this is because of the pressure being put on the nerves in the neck which supply the electrical signals to the brain.

I don't remember if this is true or not, it would certainly make sense that someone would pass out from the lack of oxygen but that generally would cause more damage. I don't remember, anyone clarify?

The brain can only go about 10 seconds or so without blood flow before pass out. 5 minutes or more and you are going in to brain damage, at 10 minutes brain death.

In regard to the squeezing of the nerves in the neck there is some truth to that. There are two large bundles of nerves called the Vegal nerves. They control breathing and heart rate. One way to get a person with a fast heart rate (120+ Beats per minute while at rest not from exercise but an out of control heart rate) to slow down the heart is to have them bear down like they are trying to take a shit. This puts pressure on the vegal nerves and causes the heart rate to slow (and hopefully stay that way so you don't need to use drugs to do the same thing). So by squeezing you cause the heart to slow and decrease the flow of blood to the brain as well as the pressure on the arteries slowing the flow.

That said there is risk in choking out someone as they may not start breathing again on their own or in worse case you could stop the heart. It's is rare though, but would you really want to be charged with manslaughter for a joke? At least learn CPR before messing around with this.
