Ok, any chess players on the site?

Any sorta chess players?

How about anybody who knows how the pieces move? :omg:

No matter what your level, this is a game for everybody. :40:

The idea is that I start off the game with the first move (white) on the first message I post as a reply to this one (I'll keep this first post to explain the rules only). Anybody can then post the next move (black), and again, anybody can post the third move, and so on.

When you post a move for, say, white side, after that, you're on the white team, and may only post moves for the white side.

Similarly, if you join the game by posting a move for the black side, from then on, you are on the black team, and can only post moves for the black side.

I'm hoping to see MANY participants, so that this doesn't become a simple correspondence game between me and some other dude/gal who likes chess. :smokin: So it really doesn't matter how good or bad you are at chess, just join in, and we'll see where it leads! For the more experienced players on each side, the challenge then becomes to salvage the game from the more... creative moves of their beginner team mates. :xyxthumbs:

We'll be using algebraic notation, which, if you don't know it, isn't as scary as it sounds - it's actually very easy to learn, and understand (which is why we'll use it!). To learn it watch, for example this video (http://www.giant-chess.com/flash/AlgebraicChessNotation.html). And/or click here (http://www.giant-chess.com/flash/AlgebraicChessNotation.html) for an example of a game with notation on the side - click on the moves on the notation, and you'll see the corresponding move on the board. It's very straight forward, and you can probably pick it up even as we go along.

If you are unsure of the notation in game, just use regular words to describe which piece you want to move and where, until you feel confident with the notation.

I'll be pasting pictures of the game position frequently, so you can see the board. If you want to have your own virtual board to try out moves on, download "WinBoard" (for windows) or "XBoard" (for Unix/Linux) here (http://www.tim-mann.org/xboard.html) - it's freeware, and very easy to use.

1.f4

MightyTiny
September 15th, 2007, 05:46 PM
Big Ozzie's move was invalid, because queen's bishop pawn up two squares = c4, which was a move already made.

So, being on the white team, I'll make white's third move:

3.e3

And the screenshot of the board:

http://i19.tinypic.com/4oztfnr.jpg

The moves thus far:

1.f4..c3
2.c4..d4
3.e3

carry on, black's move! :xyxthumbs:

Oh, and please include the move number with your move - makes it easier to follow.

So, for white moves the format is

1.f4

and black response:
1..c3

and so on - black posts the move number, two dots, and the move, white posts move number, one dot, and the move.

Borro

MightyTiny
September 15th, 2007, 05:54 PM
That's 3..e6 - please include the move number, it's easier to follow the game that way.

MightyTiny

4.Bd6

Sorry to nitpick, but one correction to the notation - blacks moves are marked by two dots after the move number.

So white's fourth move is marked as 4.MOVE and black's fourth move as 4..MOVE. :xyxthumbs:

Not cool at all. :(

That's one of the reasons I rarely play chess on-line these days - if I want to play the computer, I can do it off-line just as well. Rampant cheating is ruining the game on-line. That's why, nowadays, I like to play dark chess. :xyxthumbs:

There are no programs for dark chess that I know of. :D

Did you mean 6.Qa4 ?

A is the leftmost column, h is on the right.

Also, in the notation, no dot (or space) after the piece symbol, and column letters are always written in lower case. :)

Anyway, bed-time for me. Play nice. :D

How`s this working, mighty? i.e. How`s a black pawn moving to a square in column 3 on its first move? Shouldn`t it only be able to move from 5 through to 8?

Great thread, BTW! Can`t believe I missed it!

I didn't really understand the en passante rule

This should explain it clearly:

5q4PBU7s09c

:xyxthumbs:

To put it simply:

If a pawn, on it's first move, moves 2 squares up, so that it lands in a square where an enemy pawn is on a square to either side of it, ON THE NEXT MOVE, your opponent has the opportunity to capture with the pawn on to the side of the pawn you just moved, as if you had moved it only one square on your previous move.

It's obviously been a while since I played chess, but you get a piece back if you get a pawn all the way across, correct?

That's correct - a pawn that reaches the last row can be promoted to any piece. That includes pieces that are still on the board - you can promote the pawn to a queen even if you have a queen left. Then you've just got two queens. :40:
