In this close up on variation 3, you can see how this position allows for active penetration with very little physical contact between the two people. It also clearly demonstrates how the partners in this position are not able to comfortably look at each other.
Notice how A, on the bottom, has some control and some contact by keeping his hands on B's hips. Also notice how B's knees are on the bed, allowing them leverage both using their upper body and their knees.
Finally, this close up accentuates another element of this position, which is that it allows both partners to be near their partners feet. That's what makes this a favorite position for people with a love of feet
