Alot of people are asking why he waited so long. Well keep in mind that he most likely lives in a poor village. On top of that the people in his village may look at him as a monster so he lives his days in his hut hideing from everyone. It's only when things get this bad are people like him forced out of hideing or they will die.

Wow ... just wow. did you even read what I posted? The fact he lives in a poor village means he has little to no money so how is he going to go to a doctor. Normally in small villages like this people tend to be under educated. Maybe beleaveing more in superstitions then medical reasons. Now that isn't always the case but it seems to be the patteren.
edit: wanted to add that being imbaressed or made fun of would also play highly to why he waited so long too.
