My opinion, on the other hand, is that it's fine if you're not proud of your country, but it's really weak to think you can skirt the "responsibility" of being an American by proclaiming that you're not like them. If I want people to see me as just me and not as just an American, I just act like myself instead of providing an excuse. Who cares if other people see it one way or the other? It's like your sig is saying "excuse them, they're just American, but I'm different!" Most likely, his comment was thought of before the first word came out of her mouth; in other words, he knew what she was going to say would be negative. If someone has struck a cord, try understanding what the person is saying before you throw your opinion around. You'll be amazed how many altercations are caused by misunderstandings.

If you took the time to understand what I said as an all-encompassing statement (meaning we all have idiots, don't use it as fodder for nation-bashing), then maybe you wouldn't have had that cord struck.

By the way, I'm happy to live in America, I think it's the greatest nation there is. I'm not always happy about the way it's run, and I still feel it's a work-in-progress. Am I proud to be American?
