Maybe if we ever need to deploy an aircraft carrier with no exit strategy, we'll send that one. Nothing wrong with joining the military to be a better person, as long as you're willing to put your life on the line for that ideal and honestly want to serve at the same time. It's those kinds of people that will cover you when the shit hits the fan.

As for people not staying in the military...well I guess I can't speak for the other branches, I can only give you my experience and the attitude I actually saw from other people...The sentiments I and other people shared was that we just didn't want to stick to the Marine lifestyle for our careers. I faithfully accepted that lifestyle for four years and have no regrets about it. I still did what was asked and what was expected of me.

If you want to talk about an easy way to get somewhere, the military allows you to retire after 20 years of service, you're provided all your amenities, and they can't fire you unless you break the law. Theoretically, you can get a pension as early as age 37. Maybe that's not an easy way, but if the lifestyle really is for you, then it's a smart thing to stay in. You can't just get an easy job after you get out, either. Believe it or not, you still have to convince employers that you're the right person for the job, and not just rest on the laurels of your uniform.
