... in physics, chemistry and medecine are often awarded years after the breakthroughs they recognise.
Not to rain on Obama's parade or anything, but surely credit when credit is due.

Couldn't agree with you more. I don't really get it...
He's funding a war and a violent occupation...peaceful?
Granted, I think he's working on a lot of ideas that may place him into the nominee category for the prize...IF he succeeds at them. As of now, everything he's done is tangled up in red tape...nothing's been accomplished.
I have a great idea...I want EVERYONE to love each other and stop causing each other pain. No fighting. Share your money with those who don't have enough. Perform random acts of kindness.
There...I did it!
Prize plox! :p

In 1973 the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to US National Security Adviser and Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger and North Vietnamese leader and negotiator Le Duc Tho for the 1973 Paris agreement intended to bring about a cease-fire in the Vietnam war and a withdrawal of the American forces. This award is definitely the most controversial one in the history of the Nobel Peace Prize. Le Duc Tho declined the Peace Prize, the only person to have done so*, since there was still no peace agreement.
* Others have refused prizes, or been disallowed from accepting them by their governments.

It's been a lean season in the NPL, Nobel Prize League.
After everyone stopped work in the fields of physics, chemestry, medicine, health care, astro physics, art, animal welfare. And the worlds humanitarians all moved to China... President Obama was the obvious choice.

Been reading a bit about Nobels: Jose Ramos-Horta was awarded one a year before East Timor gained independence from Indonesia.
Apparently Peace Prizes are also used to give recognition to causes that are works in progress.
Currently, I guess this has to count for something relatively concrete:

Front seat view of Clinton diplomacy
...
Turks and Armenians, with a lot of help from the Swiss and the Americans, finalise the details of an agreement that had been in the works for weeks.
But when a conflict has been going for almost a century and the two parties are so bitter about the past and passionate about the issues, which touch on the very core of their identity, we should have known to expect a few bumps in the road.
High drama
It soon became clear something had gone wrong at the last minute.
The Armenians had objected to the statement that the Turks were planning to make at the ceremony and had never left the hotel. The Turks were already at the venue.
Intense shuttle diplomacy was going - the Turks were in one room, the Armenians in another as the Swiss mediators, and the American, Russians, French and others went back and forth, carrying pieces of paper.
...
Ministers missed their planes, Mrs Clinton missed her London dinner plans but an hour-and-a-half later, the Armenians and the Turks put pen to paper.
The solution? No-one made a public statement.
On the flight to London, we asked Mrs Clinton whether this had been the most challenging diplomatic endeavour she had undertaken.
"It's what you sign up for," she replied, "when you're trying to help people resolve long-standing problems."
As members of the state department press corps we, of course, get mainly one version of the events, the American one - so maybe the Russians feel they were actually the ones who clinched the deal, or perhaps the French will say they came up with the creative solution of not making a public statement.
But we certainly got a front seat view of the American diplomacy machine in full action. I guess it was a team effort by several governments besides the USA's, but still noteworthy.

However, when Bush was still a president, more than 1/3 of all Europen seen USA as a danger. More or less also in Asia, Africa and South america.

Even though your spelling is atrocious, I agree with this point. Other than Martin Luther King and Mother Teresa, I really don't know of anyone who has won the Nobel Peace Prize. I really couldn't care less who they give it to. That being said, I don't see anything Obama has done to deserve this award.

Yeah, because devoting yourself to a life of poverty and helping the less fortunate is a terrible way to live.
BTW...she donated the money and the car she was awarded...so, she didn't really get any 'prize'.

Obama just got the prize because he's doing such a good job at not being G.W Bush. Someone mentioned ass-kissery? I concur.
Also, and I want to point this out, Sweden may be the host and in charge of the whole Nobel Prize thing, but it is actually the Norwegians who pick who is going to win the Peace Prize, specifically. We gave them the "honour" of doing so, since they felt lonely without the Swedish occupation of their country until 1905.

Meatballs and lingonberries are good!!
But fancy Swedish people? What do they eat? Um... Foreign cuisine, or like Swedish foods prepared italian or french style.
Otherwise, marinated raw herring, fermented herring, salmon, all kinds of fish and crustaceans, crayfish in particular. That would be it.
Not that it's fancy food, but moose is actually very good meat.

Ja, kind of. Still, it's rougher. A bit like a fucked up mix of venison and ox meat. It's perfect for making a stew or a boeuf Bourginion of some sorts. Good winter food.
