I've heard that line a million times on Cops. Sometimes they'll also say "bazooka" or "tank". I think I heard one of them say once that that line is kind of a test. An innocent person might laugh at that line. But someone who's actually trying to hide something will just say, "no".

They are usually more willing to let ya go then write ya up. Tickets mean court time for them and some departments don't pay for court time.
Simply treat them with a little respect and curtesy
and ya don't get your ass kicked by the Police.

I agree I go on ride-alongs with the police all the time, and that's the attitude of every cop I met. (if your a dick to me I'll be a dick to you, and your going to jail.) Most cops are pretty cool.
