'Fat for cosmetics' murder suspects arrested in Peru

Four people have been arrested in Peru on suspicion of killing dozens of people in order to sell their fat and tissue for cosmetic uses in Europe.

The gang allegedly targeted people on remote roads, luring them with fake job offers before killing them and extracting their fat.

The liquidised product fetched $15,000 (£9,000) a litre and police suspect it was sold on to companies in Europe.

At least five other suspects, including two Italian nationals, remain at large.

Police said the gang could be behind the disappearances of up to 60 people in Peru's Huanuco and Pasco regions.

One of those arrested told police the ringleader had been killing people for their fat for more than three decades.

The gang has been referred to as the Pishtacos, after an ancient Peruvian legend of killers who attack people on lonely roads and murder them for their fat.

Human tissue

At a news conference in the capital, police showed reporters two bottles containing human body fat and images of one of the alleged victims.

One of the alleged killings is reported to have taken place in mid-September, with the person's body tissue removed for sale.

Cmdr Angel Toledo told Reuters news agency some of the suspects had "declared and stated how they murdered people with the aim being to extract their fat in rudimentary labs and sell it".

Police said they suspect the fat was sold to cosmetics and pharmaceutical companies in Europe, but have not confirmed any such connection.

Human fat is used in modern cosmetic procedures but in most cases it is the patient's own fat that is used and under strict legal guidelines.

Medical authorities have expressed scepticism about a black market for human fat, partly because of the wide availability of fat for use in surgical procedures.

'Detailed confession'

Gen Felix Burga, head of Peru's police criminal division, said there were indications that "an international network trafficking human fat" was operating from Peru.

The first person was arrested earlier this month in a bus station in Lima, carrying a shipment of the fat.

The Associated Press news agency quoted Col Jorge Mejia as saying one of the suspects had described to police in detail how the victims were killed and their fat removed.

The suspect said the fat was then sold to intermediaries in Lima and that the gang's leader, Hilario Cudena, had been carrying out such murders for decades, AP reported.

The alleged buyers of the fat are also being hunted by police.

 Alcohol 'protects men's hearts'

Drinking alcohol every day cuts the risk of heart disease in men by more than a third, a major study suggests.

The Spanish research involving more than 15,500 men and 26,000 women found large quantities of alcohol could be even more beneficial for men.

Female drinkers did not benefit to the same extent, the study in Heart found.

Experts are critical, warning heavy drinking can increase the risk of other diseases, with alcohol responsible for 1.8 million deaths globally per year.

The study was conducted in Spain, a country with relatively high rates of alcohol consumption and low rates of coronary heart disease.

The research involved men and women aged between 29 and 69, who were asked to document their lifetime drinking habits and followed for 10 years.

Crucially the research team claim to have eliminated the "sick abstainers" risk by differentiating between those who had never drunk and those whom ill-health had forced to quit. This has been used in the past to explain fewer heart-related deaths among drinkers on the basis that those who are unhealthy to start with are less likely to drink.

Good cholesterol

The researchers, led by the Basque Public Health Department, placed the participants into six categories - from never having drunk to drinking more than 90g of alcohol each day. This would be the equivalent of consuming about eight bottles of wine a week, or 28 pints of lager.

Quote:

People should not be encouraged to drink more as a result of this research
Professor Martin McKee

For those drinking little - less than a shot of vodka a day for instance - the risk was reduced by 35%. And for those who drank anything from three shots to more than 11 shots each day, the risk worked out an average of 50% less.

The same benefits were not seen in women, who suffer fewer heart problems than men to start with. Researchers speculated this difference could be down to the fact that women process alcohol differently, and that female hormones protect against the disease in younger age groups.

The type of alcohol drunk did not seem to make a difference, but protection was greater for those drinking moderate to high amounts of varied drinks.

The exact mechanisms are as yet unclear, but it is known that alcohol helps to raise high-density lipoproteins, sometimes known as good cholesterol, which helps stop so-called bad cholesterol from building up in the arteries.

'Binge-drinking'

UK experts said the findings should be treated with caution because they do not take into account ill-health from a range of other diseases caused by excess drinking.

"Whilst moderate alcohol intake can lower the risk of having a heart attack, coronary heart disease is just one type of heart disease. Cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart muscle, is associated with high alcohol intake and can lead to a poor quality of life and premature death," said the British Heart Foundation's senior cardiac nurse, Cathy Ross.

"The heart is just one of many organs in the body. While alcohol could offer limited protection to one organ, abuse of it can damage the heart and other organs such as the liver, pancreas and brain."

The Stroke Association meanwhile noted that overall, evidence indicated that people who regularly consumed a large amount of alcohol had a three-fold increased risk of stroke.

"Six units within six hours is considered 'binge-drinking' and anyone indulging in regular 'binge-drinking' increases their risk of stroke greatly," said research officer Joanne Murphy.

Public health specialists warned no-one should be encouraged to drink more as a result of this study.

"The relationship between alcohol and heart disease remains controversial," said Professor Martin McKee of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

"While there is good evidence that moderate consumption is protective in people who are at substantial risk of heart disease - which excludes most people under the age of 40 - we also know that most people underestimate how much they drink. This paper adds to the existing literature but should not be considered as definitive. "

In the UK, the recommendation is no more than two to three units of alcohol a day for women - the equivalent of one standard glass of wine - and three to four units for men.

The British Liver Trust said: "There have been several studies suggesting that small amounts of alcohol can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease in men over the age of 40.

"But these are often misinterpreted by people looking for a health reason to consume alcohol.

"If you want to look after your health, stay within the limits of no more than 3-4 units a day for men or 2-3 for women and aim to give yourself at least two days off alcohol a week."

Professor Alan Maryon-Davis, president of the UK Faculty of Public Health, agreed that the message from this study was not clear: "At the end of the day, you're juggling different risks and benefits, maybe helping your heart or maybe damaging your brain and liver.

"The simple message is moderation.

"Stick to the guidelines, and you won't go far wrong."

I'm pretty tired though. Big day today and worked out a bit before. Spent the rest of my time staring lovingly at my seedling.

but anyway what funny things have happened these last couple of days?

Uhm.

yesterday at Mcdonalds, (lunch break) I was waiting patiently in line with this laid back, awesome smile on my face.. thinking, "Man.. I'm going to buy myself an Oreo McFlurry, and it is going to KICKASS" (i had already eaten a grand angus meal).. and guess what happens?

This old FUCKING BITCH CUNT FUCK  comes and stands in line ... NEXT to me.. and then I kinda look sideways at her like >_> .. that.. as i see her start inching her way forward.. like an old person.

I'm like.. thinking.. "hang on a sec.. what's she doing? is she really going to try and cut in front of me? Does she not understand how badly i could utterly destroy her 85 year old self in a fight in real life?"...

.. but she keeps doing it.. then when she thinks she's gotten far enough in front of me, she like leaps towards the counter and stands there looking at all the staff really fast trying to get someone to take notice of her.

But guess what happened? HAHAHAHAHAHA.. AHHAHAHAHH A

This mildly attractive girl behind the counter calls me over, because she had been checking me out the whole time i was waiting there and she was organizing someone else's meal.. you know.. thinking of how awesome i was and getting excited that she could serve me soon.. so yeh.. she totally ignores grandma and calls me over.

I'm like.. HAHAH FUCK YEH BITCH. IN YOUR FACE DEVO-GRANDMA, YOU CHEATING BACKSTABBING DEVIANT LINE-SKIPPING COW!! AHHAHAH!! I WIN YOU LOSE!!!. :D

And what's funnier is she was standing there looking all disgruntled and tutting and shit. Like she was appalled i got served before her.

Sorry old lady.. I respect my elders and shit. I'd let you have my seat on a train or a bus. I'd help you cross the road.. I'd help you with your groceries.. I'd rescue you from aboriginals.. but no FUCKING WAY am i letting you get between me and an OREO fucking MCFLURRY.

Anyway that's the end of that story..

.. actually to be honest even though the Oreo McFlurry was fucking awesome.. FUCKING awesome... later on i felt ill whilst stacking turf.. like i could throw up. Also got hell light headed and shit. Dunno if that was to do with the McFlurry or not. probably just my liver failing.

So its now official, The Pirate Bay tracker has been taken down forever. Its a sad day for pirates everywhere, alas we knew it would happen eventually. DHT has now become number one. Oh well......

http://thepiratebay.org/blog/175

Now that the decentralized system for finding peers is so well developed, TPB has decided that there is no need to run a tracker anymore, so it will remain down! It's the end of an era, but the era is no longer up2date. We have put a server in a museum already, and now the tracking can be put there as well.
By moving to a more decentralized system of handling tracking (DHT+PEX) and distributions of torrent files (Magnet Links), BitTorrent will become less vulnerable to downtime and outages:

With decentralized peer acquisition, there is no central tracker that can be down.

With decentralized fetching of metadata (torrents) we don't need to rely on a single server that stores and distributes torrent files.

This is the future. And the present.

I'm so excited.

When i went up to port hedland (up north) to work. I was working away and found like a seed pod with seeds in it.. so i gathered the seeds and put them in the little pocket of my pants.

When i got back to perth i remembered that i had the seeds in my pants, so i searched for them.. although my pants had gone through the wash and only one seed remained.

I planted this seed in a pot with some dirt (more like sand though coz that's all there is around here, white beach sand type shit).. and watered it and left it in the sun.

Like.. two months later i was wandering around and discovered a seedling coming out. With a pod thing attached to the top that had split and little leaf things were coming out.

I was like HOLY FUCKING SHIT!?!??!

Now i've been trying to water it daily and keep it in a sunny spot. (well it gets sun in the afternoon).

He was looking a little thirsty today so i gave him some water. My little seedling champion he is. I wonder what kind of tree he'll end up being.

Probably a big one,.. i'm guessing like the trees i was working under up north.. at a guess.. I didn't take much notice of what type of trees they were though.

Anyway i'm excited.. it feels like I have a child now. A child of my own. Who is actually a tree.

I'm paranoid about looking after him though, like is he getting enough sunlight? water? Is his dirt good enough? I mean i don't think white sand is very high in nutrients for my little guy. Should i give him fertilizer? I have a bzillion different types of fertilizer I could get from work.

Actually i might grab some of the organic shit/dynamic lifter and give him some of that to feed on. I think he's a bit young to be taking some of the chemical stuff.

anyway discuss.
